Yeah, I've got no idea what's going on in these games.Ĭlick to shrink.Halo CE's story is simple and to-the-point, which I really like, but the only characters who get any real focus are Cortana and Guilty Spark. Even the tentacle monster.Īdding to the confusion is that The Master Chief Collection doesn't have any audio sliders OR subtitles during gameplay, and since 90% of the exposition is delivered during gameplay and almost completely drowned out by weapons fire I just miss most of it. At first I thought it was the MGS3 thing where they're actually speaking alien but it's being auto-translated to English for the audience's benefit, but once aliens and humans start having normal conversations it becomes clear that, nope, everyone just speaks English now. And I have no idea why all the aliens speak English now.

Flitting between time periods and planets as two characters with no establishing shots to nail down where each one is at any given time, who fall down different holes but end up in the same chamber with a giant tentacle monster who then starts teleporting each of them to different places for the rest of the game. Halo 2 in particular was impenetrable to me. The script is just this capitalized word salad of Truth, Regret, Oracle, High Charity, Brutes and Grunts and Elites and Forerunners and Reclaimers, and if you fall behind you've got no chance of catching up. Bungie's approach to storytelling is apparently to write down a list of random proper nouns, assign one to each character, faction, location and then assume that the audience will instantly memorise all of them because they won't explain them twice. I played Halo 1 and 2 for the first time in the last couple of months, intending to move on to Halo 3 when I get some spare time, but I am already BAFFLED by the story. That slow build as you descent into the facility, realising that something is very, very wrong. I personally feel the introduction of the flood is one of the best sequences in FPS history. I mean, you literally just point the camera and that's where the vehicle goes.
#HALO GAMES IN ORDER STORY WISE PC#
Steve Downes gives a really good performance, and the character has a lovely soft-spoken quality that was in welcome contrast to a lot of gruff, over-emoting male characters from that period.Īlso, "controlling vehicles was torture"? I've only played the PC version of Halo, but the vehicle handling was really well done. I've always liked Halo 1's writing more than the other games simply because it has a fairly clear direction and doesn't get too muddled down in big picture backstory stuff.Ĭan't agree with you about Master Chief. These people were largely absent from the sequels. My understanding is that pretty much the entire writing and direction stuff was done by people Microsoft bought onto the somewhat troubled project. Halo 1 was written by different people to the later games. I also enjoyed Halo 1 more than the sequels.

I enjoyed Destiny 2's campaign significantly more than any of the Halo trilogy campaigns. There were some cool set piece moments, but much of the time I found myself wanting to rush through the games because I found them really mediocre.Īny one else feel the same way? I imagine these games would have gone over much better when they first released years ago. I didn't care about any of what was happening. The story thread throughout the trilogy wasn't very interesting. Master Chief must be the most boring main character I can remember. Come to think of it, that mirrors the terrible voice acting. The writing was not good - very stiff, lacking emotion, and bland. I often found myself laughing (especially in Halo 3) when there were moments that were supposed to be emotional and fell soooo flat. Also, controlling vehicles was torture.īut my biggest problem with the games was the terrible storytelling and characters. Nowhere near as satisfying as most modern shooters. That said, I do think the shooting mechanics are highly overrated. I also enjoyed most of the music and some moments of the gunplay. I was very impressed with how great these old games looked on my 4K TV. I just rolled credits on Halo 3, and have completed the Halo Trilogy for the first time via The Master Chief Collection on Xbox One X.
